Re: Mauser rifles at auctions

All the 7x73 SEvH are pre-war and were built on Mauser commercial Magnum length actions. Note the position of the recoil crossbolt at the rear of the receiver ring, a dead giveaway for a Mauser Magnum action. As true Magnum length actions were available no more after WW2, cartridge production was not resumed. Gehmann, who owned the "Vom Hofe" trademark, designed the rimless 7x66 SEvH instead as a replacement, as this shorter cartridge could be used in an opened up standard length action. BTW, in designing the 7x66, Gehmann copied a pre-war experimental cartridge by Wilhelm Brenneke. I even know a pre-war vom Hofe rifle, originally in 7x73. Post-war Gehmann rebarreled this rifle to 7x66 and inserted a wood filler block to shorten the now unnecessarily long magazine! the most silly conversion I have ever seen! I don't know who made these rifles for vom Hofe. May have been Chr.Funk or Schmidt & Habermann, who made all the "Original Wilhelm Brenneke, Leipzig" rifles.
