Re: Mauser rifles at auctions

I don't believe the .333 to be original as it is now. The action is a standard length Mauser action, but the stock is a pre-1912 commercial Mauser one inletted for an intermediate action like the ones used for the 7x57 = .275 Rigby. The front, rear sight and sling swivel bases are unlike any ever made by Mauser before WW2. The action seems to be of military production too, as it lacks the long striker nut then used on commercial Mausers. The magazine floorplate is not of straddle-type like those used by Mauser on .318 and other rifles. If action and stock were made by Mauser together the Mauser commercial serial number and proofmarks should be visible on the receiver ring, directly above the woodline. IMHO a concoction of a barreled action by some British maker assembled into a Mauser commercial stock to make a complete rifle. Fell into a similar trap once at a Holt's auction: Got an original, pre-1912 commercial Mauser stock like the one shown here, serial number 36750, wth the barreled WW1 small ring Kar98AZ 8x57IS action and British express sights.
