i think i picked up a rigby 400/350 stock dirt cheap on ebay. i don't have it in hand yet but from the pictures it sure looks like its for a step ring action with slanted bottom metal. hopefully it will clean up. it will probably take me 20 years before i can find and afford the rest of the parts. |

It looks like that's exactly what you have. Mauser action #23968 was from 1908, and Rigby #3485 would have been around 1908-1910. Great score, can't be very many of these lying around loose. The stock can easily be restored to like new. Congrats. |

Nice find A man who owns a number of those and does great restoration is Lon Paul at Tanglewood Guns |
i've seen Lon Pauls work and its first rate. as soon as i get the stock in hand i'll figure out what i'm going to do with it. i'm building a rigby style 303 mauser so i'll at least have a good reference for the stock on it. |
For example; Mauser m98 #23933 is 1908 BU -proofed RIGBY, magnum action with calibre .400/350. |

I know a guy would love to run that pattern through his duplicator , nice find! Steve |

It's not a 400/350, it's a 350 Magnum sold March 23, 1910 to a Mr Walton. |

thanks, i think for $52 shipped i didn't do to bad. i have a friend with a duplicator that i might run it through to make a pattern stock for my 303 project. i just have to make sure the stylus won't damage the stock |
Nice find. I bet you could make your money back renting it out for duplication. Think of it as a Stud fee.... |

Two years ago I missed buying a stock like this one by 45 minutes, and now this one on eBay of all places! If you ever decide to part with it, I have everything else needed to recreate the original Rigby rifle and would be glad to offer a handsome profit. Similarly, if you decide to use it for a duplicating pattern, I would be a potential customer for a duplicate. |

XAUSA, I might bid on the stock also since I have the rest of the parts. |

XAUSA, once i have the stock in hand we'll talk, it shipped yesterday so i should have it by the end of the week. jgrabow, i'll keep you in mind if i decide to part with it and XAUSA backs out. i doubt i'll ever come across the parts to put it back together and i defintly think its something that should be restored and put back in service. even though it would not be numbered to your action i think an original rigby stock would still be better than a close copy of it. i'm also not sure about duplicaiting it without some slight damage from the stylus and attaching blocks to it to mount it in the duplicator. i am going to at least make some detailed drawings and cardboard patterns to use as a reference on my 303 project. the stock was listed as a vintage stock for a winchester remington or savage as soon as i saw it was for a drop box i started looking closer. i always do a search for vintage in rifle parts just to see what pops up, this time it paid off. there are more pics on the auction page http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370663420931 |

Dirtyjim, The more I look at your stock the more I think I'll keep the replacement stock that came with the rifle. If you decide to duplicate this stock then I would be interested in one. But, if you make the right offer, you can restore the original parts to this stock. |

jgrabow that is a very tidy rifle. I am very envious. |
Here are the "before and after" versions of my Rigby .350 Magnum. I started with an action and Lon Paul supplied the original stock and the rest of the parts for the project. I would now like to carry out the same project with a second action, which was originally the basis of a Rigby 300/350. |

xausa, that's a fantastic looking rifle. I like the wood. The replacement stock on mine is straight grain walnut. |
Someone asked for this. The attached are photocopies of a photocopy from Paul Roberts of the original Rigby ledger entry. It's the middle rifle in both copies. |

XUSA great looking rifle. jgrabow for straight grain stocks that you would like to look like much better wood try Mark here. Usually cheaper than restock in good wood and you get to keep it the way it came if original wood. http://www.marklarsongunart.com/#!grain-enhancement-portfolio |

So I am seeing this correct.......jgrabow has the metal work that was original to the stock that dirtyjim just bought on eBay ??? |
I do believe so, Caprivi. Small world! |

the stock came in today. i cleaned it up a little. there is what appears to be a small crack at the rear tang that looks about 1/16" deep and goes down the wrist around 1" but it might be a scratch. even with a flashlight on it its hard to tell. the rear sling swivel threads are pulled through. overall its a nice stock. i'll get a few more pictures up this afternoon or tomorrow morning. it does look like jgrabow has the botom metal for this stock, to bad i'm a poorboy right now or i'd make an offer on it. both jgrabow & XUSA's rifles are very nice. i'm going to make some detailed pics, drawnings and cardboard patterns this weekend. once thats done i'll decide exactly what i'm going to do with the stock |
dirtyjim, It's the entire rifle sans stock, not just the bottom metal. When the rifle was restored/refinished, a plain walnut replacement stock was fitted and the original stock was probably sold. The copy of the ledger entry indicates the original rifle was a Best Quality so there should be some nice wood under those dings and gouges. I won't sell it now anyway. I broke the rifle plus there are some other issues and i'm in the process of sending it to Steven Bertram at Bertram & Co. LTD to get it fixed. |
i didn't notice the number on the side of the receiver only on the bottom metal. the buttstock does look like it has some nice wood under the finish. |
here are a few more pictures of the stock. crack at the wrist a few scratches on both sides i still have to make some templates off it this weekend |
I'll bid 100.00 for the stock and 200.00 for the barreled action...........:):):) |

Dirtyjim: A good stock duplicator should be able to use that stock as a pattern and not hurt it at all. I just had one done from a stock with no dings at all and it was returned just the way it was received. This duplicator is in Montana, if you would like his name and number PM me. Bob |
