SharpsNitro, Sure sounds like a .280 Ross, also called the .280 Rimless Nitro Express. The bolt guns had some pretty impressive performance characteristics, for the day. Erin Boyd notes in his "The .280 Ross Rifle, A Fast Shady Lady" a Westley Richards .280 Ross built on a magnum length, square bridge, Oberndorf Mauser action. With modern bullets and powders they're still a hoot. Brass is a trick to find now that Huntington isn't importing the Horneber brass anymore but Quality Cartridge has said they will run a bunch if there is enough demand. I'm thinking it's going to take a bunch of .280 Ross owners getting together to get a run going. I picked up a .280 Ross SXS a couple years back and owning it has been quite the educational experience; shooting lighter loads of course than the bolt guns. Regards, Buchseman |
