Unless you particularly want a Kurtz Mauser action, you could save a small fortune by choosing a Brno ZKK601 short action (M98 derivative, essentially a small ring size with a grooved 'double square bridge' style receiver available from the factory in .222, .223. .243 and .308 etc).

If you get one with the right size bolt face most of the work will have been done, all that remains is some action smoothing and a trigger job. Should be able to pick up a whole rifle for $650-750... quite a few were imported to Canada I'm told.
