Rusty's Action Works
186 Rectory Rd
Montross,Va 22520
Attn: Rob Zimmerman
He makes the nicest Rigby type that I have seen. I just bought one and am in process of installing it. A friend is cutting the dovetail now. They are beautifully made and function is flawless. I think he makes them in batches of 4. I got one out of the first batch.$225 plus postage I believe. Go to Accurate Reloading and he posts under Rusty Marlin. There are several good pictures. You won't be disappointed.

Re: Mauser 98 cocking piece peep sights

Bramble / TIA:
I have one from a maker in Germany that I will install on an '88 action sporter carbine. It's new and in white.
I had this one brought for me from Germany a year ago.
Two sources that may help. NECG and the German Gun Collectors Assoc..
I like these because they can be dialed down below sight level for use with the open sights, then have the Rigby sytle sight for the over 100 -0150 range.

My need is a source of Mannlicher style german Claw Mounts. As with many german sporters, the rings and scopes are gone. The original owners, prior to the Allies confescating or destroying the sporting guns, took the only thing they were allowed to keep. The scope.

Mauser 88 Sporter fan.

Bramble,
I'm posting again don't know what happened to my first one. I don't have the sheet that came with the sight that had his number on it I believe so I looked it up on Switchboard' It is 804-493-9370,

88MauSporter,
Don't know exactly what you are referring to when you say 'Mannlicher Style' claw mounts. I have a set of new claw mounts that have never been fitted. I was going to put them on my Merkel but used pivot mounts instead. They are available for a reasonable price.

Re: Mauser 98 cocking piece peep sights

Question about the cocking piece peep sight.

I have read alot of criticism of it over the years due to the play and movement of the cocking piece itself.

Most of the 98's I've owned and/or shot over the years do in fact exhibit a fair amount of play though I suppose actual moveent doesn't matter if the release is from the same point each time.

What is your experience with these sights? Has anyone compared a cocking piece peep with a fixed receiver-mounted peep on the same rifle, particularly at long range where differences might be more dramatic?

As you're in England, I'd think the closest and easiest might be to contact Gottfried Precht in Germany (He speaks very good English).

I was never gone!

Seriously though, I'm still on crutches, which is getting to be a pain in the ass after 11 months. But will hopefully know more after I get an MRI in a weeks time.

Bramble, the sight photo from Eric is the same I have that I will mount on my "88 carbine.
Mine came from Germany as well. Dietrich Apel of the German Gun Collectors Assoc. brought it back from Germany a couple years ago.

Rusty,

That is one fine looking peep sight. Will you also do the installation? If not, do you have a recommendation?

Thanks,
Curl

Rusty:
very nice looking work ... you are to be commended!
have you set these up for production on CNC equipment?
are you using wired cut machines?

Re: Mauser 98 cocking piece peep sights

Bramble, I'm glad you like it.

CptCurl, I can do the install, but I don't do blueing, (just tossing that out there incase you consider it part of the install). I have little ones and they like to hang in the shop with me and I don't want the chemicals around them. So you're on your own for blueing, or I can send it out.

Double Trouble, Production on CNC? LOL, I wish! These are made on manual machines, a 1957 round ram Bridgy and a two year old Grizzly 13x40 Engine lathe. I used to live and breath CNC for my day job, I could do the G-Code programing, set up and running in my sleep, but the demand hasn't been high enough to pay for the set up. The entire sight could be made with a bar fed, live tool turning center all from the same bar. I have complete parametric models and prints, so it would be snap to program with a CAM system.
If the the demand rises, I'll definatly go that route, but for now they are handmade, lovingly, in small batches.

There's no need for wire cut on these parts, a turning center could knock them out easy.

Re: Mauser 98 cocking piece peep sights

well the workmanship looks great and I know what you mean about justifying the set up for CNC.
IMO there is more value in the product as you currently manufacture it not from the time standpoint but from the intamacy of the work.

Well done!

Re: Mauser 98 cocking piece peep sights

Zim,

I was reading this old thread and noticed that your question about claw mounts for a Mannlicher never got answered.

I think what was meant was the special mount used on Mauser 88's and Mannlicher-Schoenauers, which both have split bridges, with the bolt handle passing through the split when the action is cycled.

This means, of course, that the rear mount socket has to be offset to the left, rather than being placed squarely in the middle of the bridge, as with Mauser and similar actioned rifles.

There are 4 bodies just about finished, need to put the flutig on and the dovetails.
I have the thumb wheels and center screws made. The only thing left is making the peep stems.
They should be shippable by Oct 21st latest.

Rusty,

I'd be interested in ordering one or two of these sights. I sent a PM earlier, but I'm not sure if it made it through the system. Do you have contact info? (e-mail addy?)

Thanks!

I wish I could see the rest of that nice looking rifle!

I can't wait to get my sight, Rob - I have a 1903 Turkish action with a long cocking piece that I'm going to have built into a 9.3x57.
