Best action for a 404 Jeffery build?

What would be the best action to have a custom DGR built on? Where is the best place to look for the action?

Mauser 98 ?

Brno 602 or 550 ? (If you want to use a big action).

Re: Best action for a 404 Jeffery build?

I am building a .404 at the moment, I would have used a Mauser 98 for traditional purposes but a Brno 602 action turned up first so I bought that instead. I don't go much on the look of the 550 action, but it will no doubt do the job just fine.

I agree, the 602 is a far better action, both in terms of build quality and looks.

I used a 602 action and you have all the room in the world to seat bullets out if you so desire.

I have Brno VZ24 screwed onto a Walther 404 barrel ready when I am.

Yes, well, a VZ24 is in a league of it's own
and as rare as rocking horse shit so I didn't
even mention that.

Yesterday I tried to convince a friend that I needed his Brno ZG47 more than he did...
No such luck...

This is a 550 action - I can't see anything wrong with it compared to a 602 action!

Cheers.

But GG, you have the capability of turning most things
into works of working art, regardless of what they start out like.

Alot of 550 weren't anywhere near the build quality and smoothness of some of the 602's.

I couldn't agree more, now that the bolt handle and safety issues have been taken care of.
Actually, the factory 550 doesn't look too bad, except for the stock. The pistol grip was fine on the BRNO 21's and 22's. I wonder why they cant get them right now.

Re: Best action for a 404 Jeffery build?

Thanks for the compliments.

Admittedly my action was probably one from the first year of production as it came my way in 2000. I haven't had the chance to look at any later produced examples - perhaps the quality has slipped a bit as per the ZKK line?. This rifle is very smooth.

My 602 .375 was made in 1967 or '68 and it is also very smooth - but what do you do about the sand blasted, parkerised finish on the action to pretty it up?

Cheers.

GG,
Very nice, both of them!
And like all your rifles these two are obviously being put to good use as well.
That 602 looks great. Is that a Slee stock?

I had a .375 peep sight 602 many years ago.
Should not have sold it!

I hope I haven't missed it in this thread, but, who made/supplied the safety? Ed LaPour maybe?

I think it was a Precise Metalsmithing (Jim Wisner) from memory. I would have imported it myself.

Re: Best action for a 404 Jeffery build?

G'Day Fella's,

GG 375, the first thing you need to do is have the action Bead Blasted to remove all the old Blued Finish. Then, in my experience if you want to have a highly polished Brno ZKK series action, the best bet is to use progressively finer grades of Emery Paper and then Wet and Dry, stapled to a piece of MDF/Custom Wood and "Draw File" the action with this.
Start with say 320grade and go to finer grades from there.

If you have NO "Hand Eye Co-ordination", pay a Gunsmith to do it!!!

The primary intention here is to remove only the top or outer crust of the Matte, Factory Sand Blasted metal finish that will be visible above the stock line, until new shinny metal comes through!
Your objective is not to remove lots of metal!!!
You should stop and retain the lettering and serial number on the receiver ring, which will still be Sand Blasted and the contrast between it and the high polished finish should look good.

I assume the reason that Brno sand blast their actions was to obtain a better Blued Finish on these Investment Cast, steel actions?
Look at a Blued Ruger action in natural day light and you will see what I mean!

Hope this helps!

Re: Best action for a 404 Jeffery build?

Thanks Hommer - that all makes sense. Have you had this done before? Any photos?

I have never seriously contemplated doing that to my old .375 but for a full on custom job I would.

I actually quite like the look of the original finish - especially with the rest of the metal rust blued.

Cheers mate.

Re: Best action for a 404 Jeffery build?

I also have a VZ 24 for my build.

Duane Wiebe, at http://www.soundmetalproducts.com/About_Us.html

Produces a high quality set of bottom metal for the 404J that plugs onto the 1898 action.

I have also considered using one of my 1909 Argies, but I would have to first anneal, and then re-carburize/heat treat. That gets to be a spot of bother.

GG375,

I have done what Hommer has talked about to my 602, and it is still in the white at the moment. I am in QLD at the moment, so when I get back to WA at the end of the week I will take a photo for you and put it up.

Re: Best action for a 404 Jeffery build?

G'Day Fella's,

GG375, I have completed this procedure on both Brno ZKK's and Winchester Mod 70's (Safari Express types in .458 etc).

Though what I did do was to leave all the rear facing flat portions of the action, matte finished.
This included the ejection port, the bolt release and the area in front of it, to minimise the chance of glare!
These areas are also an absolute Pain In The Neck, to polish out By Hand! So it's a Win-Win situation!

As you mention GG375, I also like matte finished receivers. It really looks good on some rifles!

I also leave the inside surfaces of the dovetails on the Brno, matte finished to give some additional purchase for the rings, if utilised.

Sorry no images and I don't know how to post them on here anyway?
Thanks for your help with this Bill!
By the way Bill, I forgot to mention.
If you look at the rear surface of your .404 Jeffery barrel (around the chamber hole), you will see ".404 Jeffery", has been stamped on it!
