Re: J.P. Sauer, What have I got?

Nice! I've got one much like it. My first Mauser (not counting the junk Israeli 308 I bought!). Looks like the J/A who drilled and tapped it for a scope, bent the bolt handle too. I wouldn't be surprised if the trigger was a replacement, too. Its hard to tell what condition the blue is in but the wood looks pretty fair. Mine was the same except very dirty. My gunsmith lightly cleaned the wood and rubbed a couple of coats of fresh oil on it and then dropped the action in the ultrasonic tank. WOW! What a difference!!! It looked great!!! No need for any reblueing. The finish on the rifles is so fine that it looks like there's wear when there is none. The other thing to note is that there are several different finishing techniques (rust, nitre blue, straw blue, case color) used on these rifles and unless you're going to do a full restoration, the reblued jobs stand out a mile away- ugh!
They are lightweight and that's what makes them so sweet. However, the stock panels are there for a reason- to reinforce the wood in that area. Its not uncommon for the stocks to break or crack on these. They handle great but can be a bit sharp under recoil. Neat rifle, eh?? That .318 bore/8x57J is a pain, though, isn't it??!
