Fitted bolt-knobs on the three WR Mausers I have personally seen in Australia have all been made of buffalo horn.
One of them was cracked too, but not split, and was still tight.
Maybe they moved away from ebony for that reason....?

Perhaps Classic416 can shed some light on the composition of the one in the photos?

...and yes, Gatti's and Connolly's marvellous work aside, the WR TD would be my pick too!
