Re: two Schuler rifles

I think that Bertram has brass for both & Woodleigh the projectiles.
Would be interesting to know how good these cartridges are on game.

Last year I aquired a Stogos marketed Schuler/Suhl '98 Mauser in 11.2x72, right now it is with Steve Bertram getting a new stock. Interestingly it is a standard length ‘98, (not magnum & not opened up), this required the bullets to be quite deeply seated at 3.265" overall.
Apparently the cartridge was loaded to two different overall lengths to accommodate rifles offered with standard or magnum magazine and action lengths.
Yes, brass by Bertram and bullets from Woodleigh........both difficult to source here in the USA likely due to almost no market for quantity sales of the brass and bullets. Lucked into a set of RCBS dies.

I have not got to shoot this one other than test fire to make sure it fed and fired before going to Steve.
In that this cartridge is roughly 1/2 way between the .404 Jeffery and the .458 Win Mag I would expect equivalent performance if using quality modern bullets like the Woodleigh.
Some early sources indicate somewhat lower than the claimed 2400’/sec muzzle velocity which would not surprise me given how far into the powder space a 400 grain bullet has to be seated to work thru the standard length action.

Think of it as a little hotter performing .404 Jeffery or as a .416 Rigby speed with a .440 400 grain bullet.

Two original Schuler headstamp 11.2x72 alongside an original .440' 401 grain solid. Note how far into the powder space the bullet is seated.
