Don't know if this is a silly question or not. Never been afraid to ask a silly question as asking is the only way to learn what you do not know. Can Mauser M03 barrels be rechambered if required? Is the 'mechanism' for locking the exchangeable barrels a hindrance in any way? The reason I ask. I always wanted a "world hunting rifle" with exchangeable barrels in 6.5x68, 8x68S and .404 (or a x68mm custom cartridge but the .404 will do). The Mauser M03 was not available in 6.5x68 but used to be available in 6.5x65 RWS. So I compromised and purchased a barrel in that cartridge chambering. I understand that now Mauser does not even offer the 6.5x65 RWS anymore. But probably does offer a 6.5x57 or similar. When my barrels arrived what was delivered was not to order and had variations. For example the 6.5x65 RWS barrel was only 600 mm, not 650 mm as ordered. Now I DO realise there is aboslutely no purpose to modifying tghe existing x65 mm barrel to x68 mm as the barrel would be too short to be worth it. And the twist rate would be wrong as well. But IF a 6.5mm barrel of 650 mm could be obtained with a reasonable twist rate, could it be rechambered by a competent gunsmith? Any complications that could be forseen? I have additional questions re M03 barrels, but will ask after any replies to the above question. Thanks. |
