I have used wax since I first heard about it in the 60's. I use plain old Johnson's paste wax for floors. I too strip the gun out of the stock and then rub the wax into the exposed metal and the entire stock. Assemble the gun and then give it another coat so that it seals the area between metal and wood. I have some that still have their origional 50 year old coat on them. Used ot to protect my Winchester levers that I collected and handled rarely. Works well and is easy to replace and cleanup.
