Re: Dumoulin Mauser .505 Gibbs

Way too many rifles made in 505 Gibbs turn out to be clubs due to heavy barrels.
The originals were not as while the barrels were thick where necessary, they were carefully tapered to give good balance

I'm having a Wichester m-71 turned into a 50 Alaskan. When I checked it in the white, I held the rifle at my side, with one hand under the action, and the muzzle aggressively sought out the floor (21" long). Since I was not looking for a buffalo (American Bison) rifle, I created my own contour and had that barrel recut to my lighter dimensions. I used the barrel weight calculator and an original .348 barrel to work out the dimensions. The barrel came out very close to calculated weight and the rifle is perfect now.

The barrel weight calculator is a powerful tool when specing out a custom job.
