Mauser sporter query

I have a picture of a Mauser sporter rifle owned by a gentleman whom I have invited to join the forums. He would like to find out more about it and was brought to the forums by the pictures of Don S's treasures. His mail reads:

Sir,

Thank you for reminding me to send the photos of the little Mauser that I recently inherited with the passing of a close friend. I suffer from a very bad "disease" that affects many men but, for some reason, very few women....Procrastination!

What I know about the rifle is very limited, and I have no paperwork to verify that it is a GI Bringback as my friend was told in the 1970's when he bought the rifle from the GI's son. It was in the posession of my deceased friend for well over 30 years.

In the photos you will see that the receiver has been tapped with screws for a scope. You can also plainly see that the stock has been notched out to accept a Lyman receiver sight. How anyone could take a rifle as beautiful and pure as a classic Mauser and butcher it like this is beyond my understanding! It's sad.

The other photo of the little J.P.Sauer und Sohn 16ga doublegun I threw in just in case you had any interest in these pieces as well as Mausers. This is also a classic SXS in excellent condition, and was patented in 1887 and made in 1893.

You may certainly pass these photos on to DonS, and post the Mauser photos on the Mauser Message Board if you think anyone would be interested. As I mentioned earlier, I am not registered on the Board, but perhaps I should do so since I now own four Mausers and have two "supposedly" all matching 98k's in line to purchase!

Very Respectfully,
Rich Pouncey

I shall post pics of his Sauer shotgun on the shotgun forums. Good hunting, everyone!
