"240" is for the rifling twist, one turn in 240mm, about 9.5". 7.85mm bore, 8.2mm groove, 240mm twist are intenal factory designations, denoting the barrel was indeed set up for the post-1904 "military" spitzer-bullet 8x57IS cartidge, so feeding it with modern ammo should be no problem at all. 156.14 was part of the official proof marks, it is a gauge number like 12, 16, 20 used for shotguns. According to the 1891 proof tables, it stands for a bore diameter at time of proof between 7.87mm = 156.14 and the next number 141.95 = 8.13 mm. These old-fashioned gauge numers were in use up to 1910 - 11, depending on proofhouse. Then the Proofhouses changed over to mm designations for the bore diameter. |
