Re: Is This A Type G? PART TWO

"240" is for the rifling twist, one turn in 240mm, about 9.5". 7.85mm bore, 8.2mm groove, 240mm twist are intenal factory designations, denoting the barrel was indeed set up for the post-1904 "military" spitzer-bullet 8x57IS cartidge, so feeding it with modern ammo should be no problem at all. 156.14 was part of the official proof marks, it is a gauge number like 12, 16, 20 used for shotguns. According to the 1891 proof tables, it stands for a bore diameter at time of proof between 7.87mm = 156.14 and the next number 141.95 = 8.13 mm. These old-fashioned gauge numers were in use up to 1910 - 11, depending on proofhouse. Then the Proofhouses changed over to mm designations for the bore diameter.
