The plain fact is that there was no rationale whatsoever. This was Mauser's idea of what was needed in Africa without consulting the people who actually did the hunting. That's why they did not sell many and that's why their hard to find. In spite of all this, Mauser kept this model in production for near 40 years. Go figure.
