English "noname" Mauser in .375 NE
|
|
Found at the recent Kassel gunshow: An English Mauser rifle in .375 rimless Nitro Express aka 9.5x57 Mannlicher – Schoenauer. Long 26" barrel. DWM M98 action. London proof marks. Not marked by a maker or dealer. Two folding leaves express sight, marked 200 and 300. Slim British style stock without cheekpiece, with horn foreend tip and steel buttplate. Flat top checkering. I just cleaned it a bit and installed one of my "Ersatz –Sportarget" peep sights http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=151111&an=0&page=1#Post151111 Will be interesting to see how the ballisics from the 26" barrel compare to those from the 20" barrel of my M 1910 Mannlicher – Schoenauer. Any comments, please?

Looks like a well laid out rifle. The blunted horn tip reminds me of my old 333 Jeffery.
I haven't seen a cocking piece peep sight like that one before. Is that a windage adjustment on the left side there?

Huvius, yes, it is windage adjustment. I posted about these sights a long time ago. Click on the link posted above. Forgot to mention weight,7.5 pounds, and length of pull, 14.5". A prestigious name like "Jeffery" or "Westley Richards" engraved on the barrel would have done nothing to improve appearance, handling or function, but would have certainly doubled the price imho.

Thanks for sharing Axel.
First ever 375 2,5" NE that I see on a M98 action! Lee enfield actions and doubles, plenty.
I love the lines on that rifle. Nice find. Agree with the "name on the barrel"

Fantastic find & rifle, looks a beauty, this is the rimless MS round not the rimmed cartridge used in BSA sporters (Lee Speeds) & Double/single shot rifles !
Love to have one to go with my 1910 when it arrives, any one know where a couple of Manlicher stocks might be hidden ?

Well Kuduae if anyone can get this old girl going it will be you! At 7.5lbs you will know when she start 'singing' again - lets hope its in tune! Certainly an unusual cocking piece/rear sight combination, but who knows; let's hope it'll be a winner for you. Don't forget to post the loads when you get a chance Cheers 93x64mm

I like the big safe on the safety....i hardly ever use the safety and have a few guns without one.i don't trust them and on that note either leave the bolt open or always point the barrel away from me or anyone

Kuduae, nice rifle, it will be interesting to see how it shoots compared to your Mannlicher. It should look good restored.

This is my recent acquisition, also from "no name" maker, with British proof marks on both the barrel and receiver. One of the marks reads .375 EX., which led me to believe that it was a converted .375 Nitro Express. However, the load it was proofed for is clearly not that of a .375 Nitro Express, and it is marked ".375 H&H Magnum" elsewhere, and accepts .375 H&H cartridges.

Xausa, your "new" .375 H&H Magnum seems to be a very early one, at least the barreled action. The Mauser serial number and the German BU (only)proofmarks date the action to 1911. The service load for the 300 gr bullet, 56 gr Cordite, is very early too, as the 1925 Kynoch catalog does not list the .375 H&H loaded with Cordite any more. Instead, the 1925 load was 60 gr (unspecified) Smokeless. Apparently the rifle was restocked later, as the style is not consistent with an "about WW1" date, as is the clarifying inscription 375 H&H MAGNUM in post-WW2 font.

I just picked up a rifle here in Montana that was likely made by the same maker. It is chambered in 375 Rimless as well, with a 28 inch barrel.

In the British gun trade a lot guns and rifles were delivered at various stages of finish by the trade to retailers who would then complete for their customer and add thei name to it. Amongst Rifles their Mauser and mannlichers that have Dickson, Alex Henry, Army and Navy etc etc. Ditto for shotguns, both box and sidelock.
Often you do find guns that got into the market unsigned. Why - a customer needed it now, a dealer needed the cash, or where sitting in stock when gunmaker retired or went bust. In the 1950's through to the 70's Parker hale sold a lot of rifles this way. William Evans, William Powell and others are all still doing this, with guns from Italy, Spain and elsewhere.

My rifle definitely pasted through the same shop as the OPs, it has the same pattern of checkering and the proof marks are identical. The differences being the trigger guard/magazine assembly and barrel configuration.

Love these old British magazines rifles.
No fanfare, functional yet minimalist stocks that fit (usually) and are made for hunting, hence their lower weights and form.

'Yanks' did it, too. This from the 1939 Stoeger catalog;
