A friend gave me a cut down Carcano rifle that needed some love.
Have you checked to see if that specific model had gain/progressive twist rifling? The early rifle models had 22.78 INCHES twist at the chamber end tightening to 7.93 INCHES at the muzzle, so shortening the barrel might leave you with a very slow twist rate not suitable for the wide range of bullet weight/lengths.
No gain twist rifling in the barrel. Barrel length is original. The rifle wood was really botched. I'm on the home stretch of the build. The trigger guard is really giving me fits with rust bluing. Having a difficult time getting it to blacken.
Hopefully, I will be able to post pics of the competed project soon.
Ah, that's good. When you said cut down I thought you were referring to the barrel. Later models were conventional twist anyway so even if the barrel of a late model long rifle was cut down there would be no loss. These are neat rifles. A bunch have come in over the last few years but the ones I investigated were really in bad shape. I'd like to tinker with one. The original 6.5 chambering is actually a darn good and well-designed cartridge.
