a stock magazine was than common for combination guns where you had 3 - 5 rifle cartridges. they just adapt this idea for this rifle.
sometimes you find rare customs - border guard M 88 carbines with such a stock magazine. that was what they had on duty, a five round clip in the carbine and a replacement clip in the stock magazine in case they would need more than five cartridges.
