a footnote in german hunting history was the beast of Lichtenmoor. this was a wolf who was causing trouble in lower saxony in the early post war years and killing a lot of live stock when food was scarce. after great driven hunts where fruitless the wolf was shoot 1948 by the farmer Hermann Gaatz. the wolf brought the whole area into trouble for some times and the old storys of a werewolf got maybe a new life than. This is the rifle shown today to be the one Hermann Gaatz use when finally got the first wolf seen there after 100 years. ![]() ![]() a similar factory made sporter M 88 carbine with a scope on three feet claw mount it does not look like the rifle the hunter had on pic's made later. especially the pic with him siting on the high seat was posed after the hunt so it could be he had another rifle then. maybe the short carbine was not registered by the british occupation force so he was showing himself with the long rifle he had on his hunting permit ? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
