I just had my example of a Greek Mannlicher out of the "military relics" gun-safe last night for some fresh air. After patching-out all the ancient Bisley Nitro Solvent the bore actually doesn't look as disastrous as I remembered. Dark in the grooves, sure, but I'm thinking of putting a few mild loads through it on the weekend to see if they go through the target point-first. The stock is a bit dismal though, unashamedly a battlefield pickup I would say. If I didn't already have a couple of original MS sporters I would salvage the action and follow John's lead, but given the prices vintage military rifles are fetching in Australia at the moment it would probably repay a careful restoration. At least then I won't have to raid the grandson's toybox for fluffy game animals! A project for the next round of covid lockdowns, perhaps? |
