I've poked about on the 'net a bit and found things that agree with / expand on GK and others' posts above. Watch this vid at 22:34 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0lXFAXzLfk for a variant that matches yours - the KNIL Marechaussee, or M95 Karabijn. Another reference: https://www.quartermastersection.com/dutch-east-indies/infantry-weapons/1249/M.95Karabijn KNIL: https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/europe/nl-landmacht-knil.htm KNIL video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MlbRPjppOs From what I've found in a brief internet search, they seem to be fairly common in horrible condition but yours may be rather scarce as clean as it is if unmodified. It seems that most of them were used and used hard for decades. Have you checked the chamber size just to be sure? The 1940 date would fit for a rebarrel in Holland just prior to Nazi invasion, and is consistent with other examples to be found on the 'net, but many were later converted to .303 British.
