I think the cutting of the serial number into the stock is a small thing compared to the extensive game tally list defacing the butt stock! I think the owner didn't care much about cutting things into his stock!

I personally like to cut my game tallies into the skin of my left fore-arm ... a nice reminder of my game killed numbers, which I can easily show to everyone when bragging about it ...
