I’ve been mentoring a brother and sister from our church who like to shoot and expressed a desire to hunt. I helped them through the drawing process and Sarah drew a cow moose tag. I’ve worked quite a bit with both of them at the range and they are good, safe shooters. I offered Sarah the use of any of my rifles and demostrating exceptional taste she chose my favorite 1908 MS 8x56. I had it drilled and tapped previously for Redfield bases and topped it with a Leupold 3x. A week ago after almost two weeks of hunting we found a cow. Her first shot was a touch high, hitting the top of both shoulders and the spinal ridge. The cow was hurt and only moved a few yards and her second shot took out both shoulders and lungs. The round was 70+ year old Western ammo with 200 grain Lubaloy round nose bullets. I recovered both under the skin on the off side. Sarah jumped right in with the skinning and quartering. It was a great hunt. I’m trying to post this from my phone because the firewall at work won’t let me get to this site. I’m at a remote oilfield and have to depend on their WiFi. I hope the photo comes through. ![]() |
