Rothammer and Waidmannsheil, many thanks for posting that article by my late friend Lud Olson! 1959 was a bit before my time of reading American gun magazines, as I was just fighting with the English language in school then. Many years later, in July 1992, Lud published another article, "Mannlicher Turn-Bolt Rifles" , in Rifle magazine. After finding the magzine in my mailbox, I took it with me to read it on a deer stand. After coming to the end I felt a bit pissed as that Mr Olson had called Mannlicher – Schoenauers things of the past. As I contemplated to write a letter, an "edible" roebuck appeared. I took up my Gibbs M-S 1903 and harvested that buck. Yes, I wrote a letter to Lud. This started a friendship that lasted to the end of his life. He once visited me when he was in Germany, but most contacts were lengthy phone calls.Of course, I still have that 1992 article and will try to post it here too. I don't intend to hijack your thread, but I think it's best to have the two articles by the same man on the same subjekt available at one place. The 1992 article contains some mistakes, of course. We did not know then about the two "New Model" Haenel rifles, M1900 and M1909. Lud only knew the M1909 name and three M1900 rifles. So he thought there was one model only. Also, the separate firing pin tip of these Haenels was not meant for easy replacement, but to preclude the rifles being fired without the bolt head, a defect of the M88 Action Lud mentions himself. |
