Some pics of the 1896 Por.t Short Navy Rifle. I believe this is the same that Hunters Lodge is selling.
CAI marked them as 'M1893 Romanian', but I believe they are are the Portuguese contract Short rifle. They used the same action as the Romanian.

Anyway, not a bad starting point for a sporter I think depending on how much you can do yourself. Bores aren't that great as I said, but a rebore to 35/303 would clean everything up w/o having to set the bbl back. Rebore to 303B would need a set back or you get a slight 2 stepped neck from the old 6;5 chamber in the new 303 chamber.

Why someone notched out the handguard on this one,,, to display the ser# on the bbl perhaps for some inventory reason?, I don't know but can be fixed if restoring or it'll be gone on a sporter anyway. Bolt a bunch of mismatched parts. Action, bbl and triggerguard are matching
