I knew a person that spent 18 years in the German firearms trade before coming back to the states. He explained to me that the peep sight is to be used in conjunction with the front and rear irons sights. Using the peep sight helps sharpen the focus on the iron sights. If you ever did any competitive rifle shooting then you may be familiar with the peep sight oculars that are affixed to glasses for the same purpose, or the poor mans version, a piece of electrical tape with a small hole punched in it applied to the lens of a persons glasses.
