You are correct about the diameter of the Texan it is 7/8. But the rings are 1 inch and the previous owner stuffed some paper into the rings as a shim.
Should you decide to go with a vintage US scope such as a Lyman Alaskan or a Noske, I believe I have some aluminum shims around here somewhere which would make the 1" rings useable.
