Could be a target rifle. Seems I have seen a similar one offered recently with a back position rear sight. Will see if I can find that info. Perhaps this one has had the barrel cut back losing the front sight mount?
Interesting, I've owned and used a number of "target" rifles and the lightest one was over 9 pounds and that was a .22. All the CF's were at 'weight' 10 pounds 4 ounces with sights.
The reclining back position was used by American, Irish, Canadian and British marksmen in the 1880's at Creedmoor and Bisley. The maximum weight of rifles for those events was 10lbs. 4oz, I believe. What the weights were later on, in the 1900's, I do not know.
