Good action to build on. Many custom rifles were built on the Greek Military actions by the British arms makers. The Model is 1903. ( I was told the (prefix) 'Y' in the Greek language is the first letter in the word meaning 'Model',,that would make sense, but it's only what I was told.) Made on contract for the Greek Military. Made at Steyr Works in Austria in 1906. Part of the first contract for Military rifles and carbines for the Greek Govt. Contract ran 1903 to 1913. Each production year marked on the left side rail along w/ 'Steyr' Second contract started 1914 w/small changes to the rifle and carbine. Actions marked '(19)03/14' Post WW1 some rifles were contracted by Breda (Italy) and are so marked on the ring. Same action as the 03/14 but the Steyr marked actions bring a better premium on a sporter. IIRC the rifles had straight extended bolt handles and the carbines had the turned down handles. I may be wrong on the latter and it's just been turned down later by someone that sportered it already. I have a Geo. Gibbs rifle built on a Steyr Greek 1907(?) action and bbl. Very nice sporter in 256 Gibbs Magnum. Good luck w/your project. I'd do a bit of polishing to the action and give it a nice rust blue finish when done. |
