restocked M-S 1903 carbine question

Ok, question for all you experts here on our favorite forum.
I have an opportunity to purchase a 1903 Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine, 6.5x54 caliber with good bluing with a very good bore and a single trigger but.....it has been restocked (well fitted), does not have the original butt plate and has a Williams side mounted scope mount properly attached.the receiver ring also has an empty dovetail cut for a claw mount but the mound plate is missing.
Im not looking for a collectors piece, if I get this rifle it will be used in the field. No safe queen or eye candy show piece.
I have only a bit of knowledge about these carbines and so I ask your advise.
Is it worth $800?
Sorry, I dont have a photo to share at this time.

Re: restocked M-S 1903 carbine question

I bought a 1903 M/S 6.5X54 with a similar dovetail cut in the receiver ring. However, someone had replaced the claw mount base with a dovetailed blank which was rounded to match the receiver ring contour. I have had no problems with it.

Whether you can live with the replacement stock is a question that only you can answer. For a purely utilitarian hunting rifle with a good bore $800 doesn't sound like a bad price, but I wouldn't hesitate to try to negotiate the price down, given the "problems" you describe.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to go for it.
My son found this rifle for me in Tennessee.
The worst part is going to be waiting until April when I go to go there for a fishing trip with my son. Oh well.

What is the destination of your fishing trip? I live close to Kentucky Lake, a real fisherman's mecca (pardon the expression).

Kentucky Lake near Big Sandy and the Obion River outside of Martin are the destinations.

Wow I wonder if it's even possible to get a original stock replicated.

I would love to make that happen too. I have a 1903 6.5X54 that needs new wood

Re: restocked M-S 1903 carbine question

There's a couple companies that I am pretty sure would have a pattern for an original stock. I'll look for the ones I'm thinking of tommorow.
