David McKay Brown, Gunmakers www.mckaybrown.com David McKay Brown started his apprenticeship with the Glasgow company of Alex Martin Ltd in 1957. Before completing his apprenticeship the business was taken over by the famous gunmaking company of John Dickson & Son in Edinburgh. This proved to be fortunate as he was able to complete his apprenticeship and training in the Edinburgh workshop. Although Dickson’s gunmaking era was coming to an end (est. 1820) he managed to glean sufficient information to continue building their Round Action Guns. He left their employment in 1967 to establish his own company, his former employer supplying a considerable amount of work. It was not until 1974 that his first round action guns bearing his own name were completed. Although experienced in all other side by side designs, it was his ambition to keep alive the round action, which was relatively unknown in world terms, being almost exclusive to Scotland. David has kept it identical in every fine detail to the gun which Dickson’s first produced in 1887, using the same traditional methods. In his Bothwell workshop the quality and degree of workmanship has been keenly upheld. McKay Brown Round Action Double Rifle The Scottish Round Action side-by-side satisfies all the requirements of a double rifle in strength, reliability and ease of handling. The action body is without doubt the strongest of all designs to which has been added the following improvements: A fully supported joint pin and bearing circle on the rear barrel lump, an over comb top strap and disc set strikers. The trigger plate lock with its bow type mainsprings has proved to be very reliable and its ease of cocking makes it quick to open and reload. No one can deny the elegance and ease of handling a double rifle made on this unique, superb design.
