The barrel is an Australian Lithgow made heavy target barrel for the SMLE. These were used on the Lithgow SMLE sniper rifles as well as many target rifles. It appears to be dated 9-59 which would indicate when the work was done. The buttstock looks similar to "SILE" or Parker Hale sporter wood from the '50s or '60s, but looks locally made. The forend is a bit of mystery as it has the filled handguard spring recesses of an ex-military stock, but no recess for the long range peep sight on the left side. If it was reblued, it was done very well. The bolt is ex-SMLE. Originally it probably would have had a MkI bolt with the safety on the cocking piece, as there is no other provision for one. A handsome rifle. |
