Its a commen caliber for the Lee Sporters. It was a caliber they also called 500/320...but it had never anything to do with any ".500" cased cartridge. Mantons was one, that offered that caliber to their sportsmen. I have encounted quit a few now here on the "net", but all of them, like this one, was a plain vanilla. I have seen them in real delux with express-sights, barrelrips etc, but only in old catalogs.
The ballistic of the 500/320 cartridge was a 244 grain bullet @ 2000Ft/sec.

It looks to be a genuine sporter albeit a basic one ,A lot of these were made up for India when the British banned the private ownership of 303 rifles ,a ban which is still in force today. The rifle and cartridge is still in use in India ,the rifles are made by the Indian ordnance factory ,the cartridge is known as the IOF 315.

yes, I remember that we both talk about this in the past: the .314 or .315 india and allways in production there

it makes sense in my eye's that you only see plain rifle's because it was the hunting gun for the common guy in the Raj with a common indian budget. but what think the lee expert's, is this a ex military rifle or original build this way from BSA?

To me it looks like an original BSA sporter ,the LHS doesn't have the provision for the volley sight ,the overall finish of the rifle looks better than you would normally find on a military rifle and it fits what would be an affordable rifle for the working class in India.

It is the plain version of the BSA #4 sporting carbine (no checkering and military style rearsight).
The dust cover and lugs to hold it appear to have been removed.

Looks a lot like the "No4 Sporting Carbine" in the BSA advert shown elsewhere on this site.
