Rolling start with a sambar stag and a good one at that came down a mountain track well in front of the hounds to a mate that had taken up a position on the track and stopped 40 yards broadside to him standing in fetlok high grasses and while looking back up towards the voicing hounds the mate opened up,first shot the deer went down as it shit itself with the bang and simply lost its footing on the hillside and then in its panic struggled to get back up,while doing so the mate emptied his rifle towards the deer AND MISSED EVERY TIME the deer then took off,i turned up with some dogs out of the truck and followed its marks for about a mile and it jumped a big hung up log across the track instead of going under it(usually done by sambar) and not one frigging skerrick of blood......nothing! The hounds couldnt pull it in on release either as they would do to a wounded deer. Now this deer was a bloody big stag as witnessed and also by its hoof size in the soft ground too and none of us there that day can believe how someone can miss such a great piece of meat firstly standing and then rattling around on the ground at 40 yards, and i reckon it was a case of the worst bloody shot/shots i have got in my memory so i`m sure you African pro`s can come up with some tales of ordinary misses with a selection from your memories. |
