One of my favourite movies is the Marcel Pagnol story, made into a movie, English title "My Father's Glory". Set early in the 20th Century, it's about Pagnol's early life experiences, in a fictional/non-fictional setting. His family travels from their urban home to a rustic cottage in Provence for the Summer. To what we would call today, an off the grid existence. Then normal county life. His intellectual father goes through a transformation, The story features the father's increasing fascination with rough walked up pheasant shooting in the dry hills and valleys. . A grand feature and character in the story is the dry Provencal countryside. Always reminds me a lot of my home and the countryside at home. We need some pheasants though. Other Pagnol movie stories a "Manon des Sources" and the earlier story, Jean de Florette, about her father, another intellectual, but a hunchback, who inherits a small provincial from, and decided to farm it, with his academic ideas. Trials and great tribulations. Water and springs are a great feature of these stories I think there was another "My Father's Glory" movie "My Mother's House" I think?. Nowadays you might watch these delightful period movies as off the grid historical fiction/non-fiction. Best viewed in French with sub-titles. |
