Certainly in the UK there is a tendency to carry rifles slung on shoulder, muzzle up. This is fine if you have a wooden stocked rifle with a bit of weight in the butt and the front swivel on the barrel, as the rifle will keep pointing vertical. But take a light plastic stock, add a moderator on the end of a barrel and bipod on the forend stock mounted swivels and the rifle becomes very unbalanced and the muzzle very quickly is pointing horizontal. I have seen this on many occasions and have ended up walking behind stalkers looking down the end of their muzzles. And there is also a tendency to carry the rifle with one up the spout just in case a deer pops out. Add in carrying a set of sticks the rifle is generally carried on the shoulder whilst fully loaded. Its a recipe waiting for disaster. |
