Re: Stalking Stags in Perthshire

Scotland, in addition to charming red headed lasses, good beer, and fine meat pies, also has a great deal of hunting/sporting tourism sites.

Anyone interested in red stag stalking should pay a visit to Blair Castle.

Back in the 1830s William Scrope was a guest at Blair Athol estates and stalked stag. He then wrote a book about it in 1838 'The Art of Deerstalking" it was arguably the first book on the subject, and he helped (along with the larger Scottish romantism of the Victorians) popularize Scottish deer stalking for British sportsmen.

Some trophies at Blair Castle:

Also, Scrope mentions in his book that once he left Blair Castle he left his rifles there (oddly Scrope appears never to stalk deer much after he wrote his book...). So when visiting I went on a quest to find them. Normally you cannot take photos in the Castle in the area the weapons are but I was lucky. The people at the museum had never heard of Scrope and were intrigued by my story. So perhaps these are his rifles? Not sure, but likely Scrope used percussion cap 16 bore rifles.

For those interested in modern guns, the shop for Dickson & MacNaughton is not far away...
