Today was the start date on my new lease. No surprise then, that I decided to get over there at sparrow fart, and see what the Roe situation was like. I had a good idea of where I might see a Doe, so set off walking the edge of a stubble field, alongside a wood. The light wind from the SE, was a wee bit swirly, but generally good. What was not so good were the Woodpigeons, roosting in the wood. They clattered away, about a hundred of them, spooking three Roe. The deer ran around, not knowing what the problem was, only that something was amiss, finally jumping the fence into very thick cover. I got into the wood and followed a track, seeing, and spooking, four more Roe. Returning to the car, I headed down to the river. Three more Roe in a stubble field ran into the wood at the approach of my car. I parked by the river, grabbed my rifle etc. and stalked the edge of the wood. Another five Roe out in the park, some way off, had moved by the time I had approached a shooting position. Following a track through the wood, to give me a circuit back to the car, the wind was steady into my face, when I spotted a Roe back in the stubble field. I had an easy approach within the wood, and stopped to glass the deer. It was a doe, with two calves. I took the mature Doe first, then the doe calf. The buck calf had round number three. ![]() They fitted nicely in my carcass tray. ![]() They are now hanging in my shed. Steve. |
