There's a few of these photos floating around on the web. Anothe shows the bear while it is being retrieved, obviously dead in the water, and another with two bear on the deck of the U-Boot. These amazing boats {most were small enough it is hard to call them ships!} operated in all waters and the high north included. Amazing. The survival rate of U-Boot crews was about 30% IIRC. As close to "Kamikaze" service as anything in the European Theater. Looks like the fellow on the left is holding a MP38/40, with the other two Mauser K98k's. I wonder if the submachine gunner was involved in the actual kill. That is quite a bit of meat for the crew, too. |
