The word is often transliterated to elk, which IIRC was the correct word for European moose in English prior to the settlement of North America. I believe early settlers here botched the word.

In Swedish it is älg and in Norwegian, elg.

"Moose" is, I think, an eastern N. American Indian word {Algonquin?}.
