Re: Hounds and Hunting Red Stag in France

Very different.

I visited a chateau in the Loire Valley in France in 1988. The original chateau is still owned by the same family for several hundred years. Chateau Cheverney itself is now a museum and interesting for a hunter with large hunting tapestries, a great set of Giant Deer antlers and other good stuff.

Nearby is the old farmhouse which is a residence, but behind it are the kennnels for the hounds. I believe the chateau is the headquarters of the 'La Solongna" forest hunt. A building houses the trophies taken from the hunt and every bit of wall, and ceiling is covered with many great sets of antlers. Quite a sight.

Another tremendous chateau also in the Loire was the hunting "lodge" of the King at the time, with 365 chimneys, 52 spires and 12 towers. "Chambord" owned by the government, is far more spartan inside with less internal furniture and decorations. However still many interesting things to see. Including chandeliers made from red stag antler, floor lamps made from antlers and covered with gold leaf, a stature of "Diana", Roman goddess of the hunt, tapestries and many other things.

I see it was recently used for a hunting show/expo, where gunmaker Verney-Carron was awarded a prestigious award. Evidenced on their web and facebook pages.
