Re: Buffalo hunting in Europe

The animal is a wisent, a european bison, very similar to the north american species ! Today we have only a few population in the N.P. of Bielowicza on the border Polen and Belarus. The game is very strong but with enough gun ( 460WM ) no problem ! The hunt is not very difficult, except the low temperature and the snow in the wintertime in East Europe . You dont need a long tracking, the Russian PH's know the hunting aera very good .

Wonderful again. And thanks for the additional comments.

How far along are you on a "wild bovine grand slam"?!

Was the Wisent hunted recently?

Thanks for posting the pics.

Re: Buffalo hunting in Europe

In Sweden we have populations in two areas, Avesta and Eriksberg. They are farmed and behind fences. Many calves have been sent to Polen to help restore their wild population. There are not more than 4 000 in Europe. The last wild Wisent was shot 1927. Then they started in Bielowicza planting with success from Zoos. I have been on a study tour to Bielowicza and its very intresting.

In Polen the hunting of Wisent in the N.P. is prohibited since a long time . On the Russian side there was a big game reserve with Wisents , a big population of red deers , wild boars . I dont know the situation today in Bielowicza !

Re: Buffalo hunting in Europe

There are great opportunities to hunt all sorts of Deer and Wild Boar in the surroundings of Bielowicza. Big populations. But you are not allowed to hunt Wisent. In the center of Bielowicza you are not allowed to hunt anything. Its a very old forest, and there are no harvesting in it. Its preserved for the future. You are not allowed to walk free in the forest only on marked trails. During the WW2 it was a hunting ground for the Nazis, and because of that Bielowicza was very little affected by the war.

Re: Buffalo hunting in Europe

Is "Bielowicza" in Poland?

I know there are Wisent in Eastern Poland.

My ancestors came from East Brandenburg in 1836-8 and I found interesting to see a Wisent trophy in one of the Hapsburg's castles with the location "Mezeritz" 1836. Mezeritz is a town a few kilometres to the North. Today these areas are part of Western Poland.

So it appears Wisent were there, perhaps a semi tame herd (?) in the 1830's.

Near the Belarus border, the border goes in the forest.
