A howdah is a sort of a saddle for an elephant. So, a howdah pistol is one carried by an Indian riding an elephant. It's a very large-bore, muzzleloading pistol, usually loaded with round balls, but any large bore pistol could be called a howdah pistol if it is used as one. I've seen double-barreled howdah pistols too. |
