Re: .45 Long Colt: Why Is The Ol’ Us

Quote:

The old war horse has been my favorite big bore handgun cartridge since the early 80's. So much so I wore out an EMF SAA clone...as much as one can be worn out. I got pretty good at quick draw with that old revolver. Since then I've owned or own a Ruger BH with a 7 1/2 in. barrrel that my oldest son and I proved everything Elmer Keith ever said about long range handgunning out to 500 yards. There was a 3rd Gen Colt my son now has and my remaining 45 is a Model 97 Freedom Arms with a 5 1/2 in. barrel. It is scary accurate.

I concur wholeheartedly with 3DogMike. Even the old BP loads are more than adequate for game up to at least whitetail size. I burned a lot of them as well. They're kinda fun at a public range. Makes the "know it all 9's" duck and flinch....lol!!! The cartridge digests several bullets quite well. I've come to prefer the RCBS, KTSWC at about 260 grs. and in my Freedom load it to around 1000 fps. It's more than adequate for anything I'm likely to need a revolver for.

Yes sir, the ol' hawg leg cartridge is as good as any and better than a lot of them!

Agree with all said about this.. great cartridge, that's why its still here..period.

Have various models in this cartridge.. very much enjoy them. They will handle anything I happen to bump into on the ranch..
