50 years ago Röhm, Germany, made a cheap o/u Derringer in .38 Special, a near lookalike of the old Remington .41. As those things weighed less than a pound, 420 gramm, recoil using the regular 158 gr rn lead bullet loads was quite nasty. But it was quite manageable when using the then popular 148 gr wadcutter target loads.
