I don't believe the 40 is dead yet..still many manufacturers selling handguns in that caliber..while not even close in popularity to the 9mm..there are still many who prefer the extra ft/lbs of energy...

Many of the courses offered for self defense prefer the 9mm for various reasons..more rounds in the mag..softer recoil..proven effectiveness with the correct bullets..etc...so, that isn't doing the 40 any favors as well..
