Different manufacturers used different thread sizes and even different external dimensions of the cylinders. But things are never that simple: some thread sizes and cylinder dimensions differ within the same manufacturer's production depending on year or contract. Things just aren't as easy as when we could fit a Christie's barrel and cylinder to a 1st or 2nd gen Colt. Don't get me started on fitting internal parts between the various manufacturers--it is a flippin' nightmare.
