After my cousin died, I ended up with the Ruger Blackhawk I sold to him back in about 1975 - no, not a .45(I wish), but a .357 with 4 5/8" bl. It is very accurate to this day with either .38's or mangleums. The SA's are fun to shoot, especially with the 4-click hammer.
Have shot one of those as well.. the one caliber I would really like to use a bit is the .41 Mag...
A friend had a 5" Smith model 57 I believe.. gold dot front site..V notch rear.. man that thing was accurate.. still checking around a bit.. factory ammo for the .41 seems to be a bit scarce however.. but that's alright..reloading is fun..
Ah yes- the M&P model 57, in .41 Mag. I was thinking along that line when I phoned Elmer in Salmon, Idaho & spoke to him about it. He suggested it would be fine as a policeman's gun, but the 4" M29 would be better as I was a handloader (he's asked about that point), thus I went with the .44. I had previously purchased a .41 Mag on a Ruger Blackhawk in '72 in Smithers and tested it. Seems to me, it had a 6" bl. With factory lead 210gr. (I think or maybe 220gr.) it shot 8" at 100 yards off bags. I took it back as it wasn't accurate enough to satisfy me and bought a Super Black hawk in .44 with the 7 1/2" bl. That one did 5" with green box 240gr. gas-checked SWC and was OK. Seems to me, I sold that one to my bro in about '74 and we cut the bl. to 4 5/8. That made it quite handy and no less accurate. We both preferred shorter bls. on handguns back then. I still do.
