Re: Luger--1917--Artillery.. with original Stock and Holster..

So why a longer barrel on an "artillery" model? Was this a firearm for self defence if the arty battery was over run? And a more effective longer barrel was desired but still a handgun so it could be carried while operating artillery?

I am NOT luger expert by any means.. my buddy is, not me..

Found this on-line ..

The Artillary Luger or Lange Pistole 08 was formally adopted by the armies of Prussia, Saxony and Wurttemberg in June 1913. The pistol was to be used by non-commissioned officers and men of the infantry and artillery munitions columns to replace their revolvers.

The pistol could be used with a board-type shoulder stock and although the claimed accuracy at 600 metres was a bit optimistic, it was certainly preferred to the bolt action carbine, being shorter and semi-automatic. It appears to have been a natural progression from the shorter barrelled P08 to aid accuracy at extended ranges and so would have been used to complement longarm conflict situations.
